Appearance: Tall for his time, Alfonso stands six feet in height and weighs in at 180 pounds of lean muscular frame. He has brown hair and eyes, and tends to dress in a coat, cape, and boots.
Personality: Alfonso tries to be the gallant gentleman, though that facade may be undone by his passions, which can seem less than gentlemanly. He holds honor in high value, and seeks to preserve the honor of others as well as his own. Once a devout Catholic, his experiences have made him less of an adherent to the ways and customs of that religion. Though he still believes in God, he is much less sure what God is or what he wants. In breaking with the Spanish fashion of his time, he is utterly unwilling to force Catholic law or custom upon others, and he often overlooks it himself. Indeed, he is virtually unwilling to force any condition on anyone, having long suffered under his relationship with the fountain. For those that do not mind being forced, however, he does have his fun.
History: Alfonso De Leon (He dropped the Ponce from his name when he registered in Millenium City) was a conquistador and Juan Ponce De Leon's nephew. Wracked by the infirmities of old age and the plague of impotency, his Uncle was desperate to establish a Florida colony and find the legendary waters that could restore him. Alfonso joined his Uncle on his final expedition to find the Fountain of Youth in 1521. When the colonists were ambushed by Calusa braves, they fought a running retreat. During this melee, Alfonso became lost in the Floridian wilderness. After days of wandering, and near death from exposure and exhaustion, Alfonso stumbled upon the fountain which his Uncle had long sought.
He did not notice that the animals of the region avoided this water. Nor did he notice the water's odd consistency or the way it seemed to writhe and move of its own accord. So parched and wild was he, that he drank nearly a gallon of the legendary elixir before convulsions claimed him and he was plunged into oblivion.
When he woke, he gradually became aware of the nature of the fountain and the ways in which it had changed him. The fountain was a living magical entity, and he had imbibed a portion of its essence. This entity was now bonded to Alfonso. It surged within him, granting him supernatural potency, longevity, resistance to ailments, and other mystical powers that would manifest over time. However, the entity believed itself to be the last of its kind - an ancient race of living water, stranded in the middle of a Florida swamp. It implored Alfonso to remain and protect it, and as it was bonded to him, its will also became Alfonso's will.
For centuries, Alfonso remained and guarded the font. He spent his time practicing his fencing, weaponsmithing, sewing, leatherworking, brewing, cooking, and reading. From time to time, he would slip away to raid Spanish settlements of reading material and basic supplies. As the Spanish were driven out of Florida, he made midnight raids on British and American settlements. He took whatever texts he could get- Books, newspapers, and eventually magazines. Through this activity, he maintained peripheral awareness of the changing times and language.
Unfortunately, he could never leave the fountain for more than a few days before the urge to return overcame him. Cut off from human contact by time constraints and a desire to keep the fountain a secret, a loneliness began to carve away at his soul. This loneliness was only partially assuaged by the company of the fountain entity itself. The fountain's power gave him not only the physical potency, but also the yearnings of a young man. An inability to satisfy his need with the warm flesh of another human being tortured him endlessly.
About a year ago, a Viper expeditionary force came upon the Fountain. Alfonso fought them well, but was ultimately overpowered and defeated. Viper drained the waters of the font, incidentally murdering the living entity. Only those who had imbibed the water before it died were able to retain its powers. Left for dead, Alfonso later awoke to find the fountain dry and its presence gone from his mind. The fountain's power still sustained him, but it no longer had a will of its own. Enraged at Viper's villainy, yet freed from his compulsion to remain at the fountain, Alfonso left the swamp.
Now he seeks out Viper wherever they can be found, hoping to shut down their sinister operations. A self-styled gentleman adventurer before his marriage to the fountain, he also seeks to help anyone he finds in distress. Alfonso tends to be somewhat anachronistic in his behavior at times, and he burns with the desire to quench his passions.
His primary armament is an Espada Ropera, a civilian cut-and-thrust sword slightly more robust than the rapier. He crafted his own sword, quenching it not in brine as was the custom of his training, but rather in a barrel of his own blood collected over a month's time and mixed with ginger and alcohol to prevent coagulation and minimize spoilage. As a consequence of this unusual quenching, the magical essence that lives within him has also infused the blade, making it unnaturally resilient and resistant to corrosion. His primary defenses are his supernaturally maintained health and his lightning combat reflexes.
Use of Force Notation: Alfonso uses his sword the way it was intended to be used. He may occasionally bludgeon foes with his pommel, but he does not slap them with the flat of his blade or use other myriad techniques that are increasingly common in the heroic community. As such, his opponents will almost always be cut after a fight, and will require medical assistance (which he summons via the remarkable cellphone or radio inventions once the fighting is done.) For Alfonso, fights are dangerous, bloody, and serious affairs. Some of his opponents regrettably suffer scars and debilitation. That having been said, he is a superb fencer with expert blade control. As such, he only kills an opponent as a last resort. He considers mortal life too brief and precious to be wasted, and laments situations where the deadly strike may be necessitated to preserve the lives of innocents. When sparring, Alfonso uses a leather sheath to blunt his attacks, and only strikes very lightly so that touches can be noted and recorded without any damage dealt.
Safe: Attempts should be made to identify and prevent risks to health.
Sane: Activities should be undertaken in a sane and sensible cast of mind.
Consensual: All activities should involve the full consent of all parties involved.
